In Great Expectations, Pip feels those effects to the fullest. He quickly realized that his social class was one of the biggest obstacles in his way as there was absolutely no way that Miss. Havisham would approve of their relationship if Pip wasnt a gentleman. Pip begins to grow apart from his family, confiding in Biddy instead of Joe. Pips obsession with climbing the social ladder and his sudden inheritance of a fortune makes him arrogant and rude, especially to the people in his childhood. He is suddenly ashamed of Joe, the person who showed him compassion and love from the beginning. He is embarrassed of his trade, something that he so desperately wanted to learn when he was younger. He believed that any sort of tie to Joe or his past would soil the persona of a suave gentleman that he was so desperately trying to build in order to woo Estella and gain Miss Havishams approval. He was so caught up in this that he didnt see how much he had changed for the worst. The themes of ambition and social advancement are one of the most central aspects in Great Expectations. In his novel, Dickens struggles to fully express to what extent a person is capable of deciding their own fate. Dickens represents this struggle through Pip, who is searching for his own identity and where he fit in the social hierarchy. Pips determination to embark on his self-improvement journey is spurred by his treatment by Miss Havisham and Estella. He so desperately wants both of them to accept him that he is willing to do anything, which is dangerous. He attempts to take his destiny into his own hands. He morphs into an arrogant adolescent, driven almost insanely by the desire to be more than he was made out to be, to one day beat societys expectations of him and fulfill his own great expectations for what he wants to be. Pip is in a way controlled by this obsession in an external manner. Therefore, has more power to think independently and form his own new identity of being a gentleman. This is what allowed him to redeem himself at the end, once he was able to separate his fantasy from reality. Pip, throughout his life was enraged by the behavior of Mrs. Joe, by snobbishness of Estella which ultimately came to his realization to reform himself into a stronger man. He realized that the position he was in being in his sisters family, he will never be able to marry Estella, so he had great expectations to change himself and be a part of the upper class family and finally marry Estella. Waters further states Pip is desperately laying claim to a position within the discourse of middle class domesticity and assumptions in forming his representations of the family and female nature are one of the means by which he established to seek his identity.(waters154). Individual in nature The theme comes out when the unfolding in the narrator life is quite different from what happens in the dream. He wishes that his dreams would come true, but that is not the case. The happenings in nature are very independent and are not influenced by what takes place during his dreams. The narrator claims that he is non-existence in both his dreams and in reality (AP Express Publishers, 2002). He believes that he is not wanted at all. He is a shadow of himself. He claims that his light might have been extinguished a while ago. This is because the events in his dream and reality cannot add up. He has no power to influence the events that take place in his life. At the same time, his dreams appeal to him. Descriptive styles The narrator provides a detailed description of the events that unfolded in his dream. He describes how he had his friend I his dream. The friend was friendly and happy and therefore offered a lot of comfort to the narrator. The narrator went ahead and swore that he could never find such a great friend from any part of the world (AP Express Publishers, 2002). However, the narrator further described how he developed hatred within his heart because the friend only appeared in the dream and not in real life. It was his wish that the friend could appear in real life and not in a dream as had happened (Trotter, 2013). The narrator further goes ahead and describes all the events that took place in the dream. He also describes the feelings that he had towards the events that took place in the dream. The readers are well informed through his detailed description. The readers of the narrative are therefore able to tell the mood of the narrator as they read through the article without necessarily having to meet the narrator in person (Strunk, 2007). Narrative style The writer narrates the events that unfolded in a dream. It is a short, interesting story. Anyone would be willing to sit down and listen to it. The author describes the imaginations that took place in the dream. He then tries to relate them to the events that take place in a real life scenario. Prescription Drugs In a recent article, an MNBC correspondent brought up the issue of high prices on prescription drugs. Many of these drugs are special vitamins, as well as supplements that certain peoples bodies lack and need and are forced to buy. This poses a financial problem. If this were to happen in both Canada and the United States, many families in both countries would suffer severely for this medical reason, a reason they shouldn't have to pay for. In some aspects, this is selfish of the government. By leaving these drugs to be overpriced, the government is basically turning a blind eye towards the fact that many of these people are having to spend an extra thousand dollars, maybe an extra thousand dollars they don't have. The prices on these drugs could easily be regulated, but, as stated in the article, the money that these companies receive goes towards research and cures for the treatments these people are receiving. So it comes down to health care. Should the health care system pay for these? While it would solve problems, it would also produce them. People with privatize health care are settled, they put in a certain amount of money each month, and they get these medications along with the system. If a common health care system would pay for these drugs, two things would occur. First, the health cares budget would go down. Not just a little, but it would plummet. Health care coming out of taxes would not be enough, and as a result, taxes would be raised. This is probably the last thing people want. Secondly, many, many people would go away from the deal much richer. Basically, it's like asking for everyone else to pay for their problems. So who's to blame? Nobody, really. You can't say it's a persons fault for being sick and requiring medical help. Also, you can't expect everyone else to pay for them to get better, a lot of people can't afford higher taxes, and it's punishing them. So it is a problem with difficult solutions, but the best solution would be for the government to limit the high prices of these drugs, but at the same time, put more and more money into research for finding a cure for these illnesses. Although some of the new non-technical hires had previous experience on oil fields, they were shocked to find that the experience they found at LINK650 was not close to what they had anticipated. Their welfare and safety as employees working in dangerous conditions were not taken care of. They had to work under dirty and very cold conditions. This caused some of the employees to resign. As if that was not enough, the supervisors in the company were too harsh on the new hires. They treated the employees badly by being abusive blatantly
